Artist's Biography

Grayson Perry (born 1960) is an award-winning Enlgish artist, best known for his ceramics and cross-dressing. He has also worked in other forms, including drawing and embroidery, and has written a graphic novel \\\'Cycle of Violence\\\'.
Born in Chelmsford he studied fine art at the University of Portsmouth taking evening classes in pottery. He is married to a psychotherapist, they have one daughter and they live in North London.

Perry\\\'s vases have classical forms and are decorated in bright colours. The subjects tackled in the decoration are often at odds with the superficially attractive and genteel appearences of the vases. These subjects include child abuse and sadomasochism among other social and sexual practices. There is often a strong autobiographical element.

Images of himself often appear in the work sometimes as his alter ego Claire.
In 2003 Perry won the Turner Prize.
