Artist's Biography

Gillian Ayres was born on February 3, 1930 in Barnes, south west London. She studied at Camberwell School of Art in London from 1946–50, where she came to loathe the tremendous influence of the Euston Road school of figurative painting, and then worked at the AIA Gallery in London (1951–9) before teaching at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham until 1965. Thereafter she taught at St Martin’s School of Art from 1965 to 1978, at which point she became Head of Painting at Winchester School of Art, where she remained until resigning and moving to Wales in 1981.
